“Mary encourages me to do things that I haven’t tried before, like testing my endurance. She’s got great positive energy and is full of surprises--I love getting to know her. She pushes me, and I like that. When I think that I can’t do something and then discover that I can, it is a real boost!"

- Melissa B., AXIS Client. Read Melissa's full story here.

Goals you have to work for, you will value more than accomplishments that are easy.

Before joining AXIS, Mary Tullis worked in the fitness industry for over six years as a personal trainer, first in Memphis and D.C., and then in the Bay Area.

“Exercising is the happiest part of the day for me. I love running, cycling, swimming, pilates, dancing - you name it!”

Mary loves teaching others, and it’s what ultimately led her to become a personal trainer.

“One day I was showing my mom how to do some exercises at our gym, and the manager asked if I was trainer. I said no, but that encounter encouraged me to think about personal training as a profession.”

One thing Mary appreciates about being a trainer at AXIS is the diversity of her clients.

“Some gyms have only one type of client, with one goal, and it’s not as satisfying to be a trainer in that scenario. At AXIS, I have clients who are 70 and 17, all with different goals. It also seems like the people who come to AXIS really want to be here, and they enjoy the time they spend with their trainers. It’s great to be part of a group that is so enthusiastic about fitness.”

Having been an athlete my entire life, I remember thinking: exercise is work--not fun. It took an injury to make me stop and learn to enjoy what my body can do, and to enjoy pushing myself to new goals. Now, I want to share my passion for life, and I hope to ignite that same passion in others so they can empower themselves to challenge their own next level. The best feeling in the world for me is when a client tells me something like: they ran their race without stopping, they fit into their 'skinny jeans', or they have less aches and pains than before.

What I like most about my job is being able to see the spark light up in people as they become turned on to fitness and adopt healthy lifestyle habits that, I feel like I have helped someone change their life forever.

My Hobbies include...Hiking, camping, golf, playing craps, wine tasting, politics, trying new restaurants, and watching funny movies.

My Hometown is...Memphis, Tennessee.

My Favorite Foods... Thai! Everyday and twice on Sunday!

My Favorite Movies....Just Friends and Sweet Home Alabama.

My Favorite Sports Team..Memphis Grizzlies.
