"Megumi always knows how hard to work me so I feel like I have pushed myself without totally exhausting me. That's a difficult thing to know, but she always knows. If I have a problem with some area, she immediately comes up with some exercise to address the specific problem I have. She helps me understand posture and diet with our conversation. I can't say enough of how honored I am to have her as a trainer." - Iris Harrell

AXIS Trainer Megumi Masuda was attending college in
Tokyo when she first dreamed of becoming an athletic
trainer. She was on the university swim team, but like
most colleges in Japan, there were no trainers
supporting the athletes.

Recognizing the importance of trainers and her growing
interest in the field, she decided to pursue further education.
The decision meant she would have to leave her friends
and family behind in Japan.

In 1996, Megumi moved to the US, barely speaking
English, and knowing only one person, a contact she
made at Foothill College.

She started taking courses to prepare for the NATA Exam,
and gained training experience on campus.

In 1999, she joined the Master's Program in Kinesiology
at San Jose State, and graduated in 2001 with a concentration
in Athletic Training. Shortly after, she began training clients at AXIS.

Although you would never hear her say it, Megumi is one
of the most accomplished athletes on the AXIS team. She
participates in many area Triathlons each season, usually
finishing with a medal for her age group. She primarily
competes in Olympic distance Triathlons, which involve a
1.5K swim, a 40K bike ride, and a 10K run. USA Triathlon
ranks her 26th nationwide for her age group.

When asked about her winning strategy, Megumi responds,
"I try not to be competitive!" From her perspective, getting
stressed out takes all the fun away from the race. "If you enjoy
what you're doing, then you'll perform well at it."
