"He is excellent in every way!" - Mihir Parikh

Strive for excellence in everything you do, and whatever the outcome, you will be a better person for it. The path to excellence is an ongoing journey and never a final destination!

One of the things Master Trainer Bart Lunsford enjoys most about being a personal trainer is his ability to influence positive
change in his clients’ lives.
“I enjoy working with people,” he says. “I like knowing that I’ve made a difference, whether it’s to help a client stay healthy and live longer, reduce pain and improve quality of life, or pushing someone to meet an athletic goal.” Bart has been a personal trainer for over 25 years, a true stand-out in an industry where five years is considered seasoned. Beyond his training certifications, Bart is certified for bodywork (Shiatsu is his specialty), and he is currently pursing a Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine.
“I’ve witnessed a lot of fads and changes in the industry over the past 25 years," he says. "There are exercises that trainers used to do all the time with their clients that would be unheard of now. The industry is always evolving as we learn more about the human body. It’s exciting to be a part of it.”
One thing that hasn’t changed in 25 years is the notion of incorporating fun into exercise, and as a result, it’s not uncommon to see Bart sword fighting yes, sword fighting in the AXIS parking lot with his clients. Interestingly enough, Bart is a former National Champion for Bushido, a form of
Japanese sword fighting.
Though no longer in Bushido competitions, Bart is a fourth-degree blackbelt. He teaches kickboxing classes in Pacifica, where he resides with his wife of 21 years and his two daughters. As a family, they stay active (hiking, rollerblading, snow-skiing and waterskiing) and they try to eat organic foods whenever possible.
On top of splitting his schedule between clients at the Menlo Park and Mountain View AXIS, teaching kickboxing, working on his Master’s, and spending time with his family, Bart is preparing for a full-natural bodybuilding competition that is taking place November 2006 in Southern California.
“I do like to stay busy,” he laughs. Though the competition is still 25 weeks away, Bart is training 1-2 hours a day and keeping a close eye on his diet. The biggest temptation? Not having wine with dinner.
“I enjoy wine, but right now I can’t have it,” he says. “I need to make every calorie count, and unfortunately, wine has too many empty calories.”
Sticking to the exercise program and the diet will be a challenge, but as Bart often reminds his clients, having a specific goal in mind is a great way to stay focused.
“Once you have a goal, you’ve already put yourself on the path to reaching it. Whatever the outcome, you will be a better person for trying," he says.
