Insulin Resistance (IR) and Exercise

Current research suggests that 10 to 20% of American adults have Insulin Resistance (IR), a condition where the body creates insulin, but it is not able to bind to receptor cells in body tissues. The pancreas secretes additional insulin to maintain blood glucose levels. The condition has strong genetic prevalence, but it is typically triggered by physical inactivity and obesity.

Although research is continuing to study the causes and impacts of IR, there is a consensus on treatment:

First, it is essential to meet with your physician since medications may be needed to treat the complications of IR.

Second, it is necessary to have an IR eating plan developed by a clinical dietician.

Third, it is important to exercise. Training programs specific to IR treatment would include cardiovascular and resistance training work that boosts metabolism, builds muscle mass, improves body fat mass, increases insulin sensitivity, lowers insulin production/secretion and, overall, reduces the consequences and risks of IR.
